What is IBDP?
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is an engaging two-year curriculum crafted for students who have completed their 10th grade. Its aim is to shape students into knowledgeable, curious, and compassionate individuals, placing a significant emphasis on intellectual, personal, and emotional growth. Let's dive into what makes the IBDP so special.
Subject Groups
The IBDP curriculum is divided into six distinct subject groups, and students must select one subject from each group. Typically, students choose three subjects at a Higher Level (HL) and three at a Standard Level (SL). Here's a peek at the subject options:
1. Studies in Language and Literature: Language A: Literature, Language and Literature, Literature and Performance.
2. Language Acquisition: Language B, Language Ab Initio, and Classical Languages.
3. Individuals and Societies: Includes subjects like Business Management, Economics, Geography, Global Politics, History, Philosophy, Psychology, etc.
4. Sciences: Includes subjects like Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Design Technology, and Environmental Systems and Societies.
5. Mathematics: Includes subjects like Analysis and Approaches, and Applications and Interpretation.
6. The Arts: Includes subjects like Dance, Film, Music, Theatre, and Visual Arts.
DP Core Components
The IBDP core is designed to broaden students' educational experiences and challenge them to apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios. This includes:
1. Theory of Knowledge (TOK): Encourages students to reflect on the nature of knowledge and how we claim to know what we know.
2. Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS): Involves engaging in creative endeavours, physical activities, and community service alongside academic studies.
3. Extended Essay (EE): An independent research project culminating in a 4,000-word paper on a topic of the student's choice.
Assessment and Grading
The IBDP uses a criterion-based assessment system, evaluating students against set standards rather than against each other. Final grades are a blend of internal assessments (like projects and presentations) and external assessments (like written exams and oral presentations). The grading scale ranges from 1 (minimum) to 7 (maximum), and a score of 24 or higher is needed to earn the IB diploma.
Benefits of the IBDP
The IBDP is globally recognized and respected, with evidence showing that DP students have higher university enrolment and success rates compared to non-IB students. The program fosters a strong sense of identity, cultural awareness, and the ability to communicate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.
